Gaijin Gunpla

On my most recent meet-up with ASM in Akihabara, he gave me a kit as a birthday present.  Ah, fellow Gunplar, you know just what to give me for my birthday. It was none other than the Pearl Clear version of the HG Unicorn Destroy Mode kit, an amazing kit of which I have already built a 限定 version.  This is a great kit so I don’t mind building it again, in fact, I relish the opportunity.

This kit was offered to theater-goers when the Unicorn OVA were released in theaters but not long ago Bandai put them on their online shop.  Of course, the order cut-0ff date for that is well past so you can’t get them online.   But I got one, and that’s all that matters (j/k… kinda..)

What makes this kit so special?

The pink box of course. (That and the Pearl Clear parts.)

Let’s look closer.

Oooh. Pearly. This Pearl effect works really well for the psycho frame. I never built the original HG Unicorn Destroy Mode kit (gasp!) but I feel the pearl effect here on the psycho frame better represents the Unicorn as seen in the anime over the normal HG kit.

I just want to digress here to say that I really like the Unicorn suit, having used it in Gundam Musou 3 which I have just got back into now as I play it almost nightly with my daughter. She sits on my lap and I will say “Square!” and she’ll button mash until I say “Circle” or “X”. I just point the suit in the direction it needs to go and she takes care of the rest. In that game Destroy Mode Unicorn is awesome!

The rest of the armor.

There’s no Pearl effect on the V-fin, though.

And the frame and armor parts are just transparent.

One thing I realized when starting this kit is that, of course the Pearl effect is cool, but it makes reading the numbers on the runners very difficult.

Fortunately for me, I have built a Gundam kit before so I was not terribly confused.

And red poly-caps. あれ?

As everyone has seen this kit before, and seen a version of it here before. I will just show some basic pictures. But before I do that, I want to mention that this kit feels quite different from the ANA version. The ANA version, being Titanium finished feels noticeably heavier, whereas this kit, being done in transparent plastic feels not only lighter but more fragile. I am tempted to weight both to compare them.

When all is said and done, or assembled in the case of a model kit…

That pic is kinda lame. Here’s a better one.

Ya, I went with a pink background for this pink-boxed kit.

Damn, another great Unicorn Kit. I wish I had the money to have the pearl clear version, the ANA version and the titanium finish, they are so gorgeous D: .

But if I could pick only one I would go with the ANA

Makes you wish Bandai did that red sparkly effect for their Unicorn OVA version. Oh, and Happy Birthday!

So is it just the picts, or does the V-fin REALLY look a sickly green? Like I wanna take it somewhere and nurse the color back into it…

The Psyco-Frame parts are amazing! I would love to be able to do something similar with paint on my HG Unicorn.

    And Happy Birthday!

THIS is how an unicorn must be, pink with glitter!

I wonder how it’d look like if this psychoframe was used to build a regular or titanium finish Unicorn Destroy Mode.

Hi I got a question. Is the 0.03 copic marker as good for panel lining as the 0.02 copic marker? I can’t find the 0.02 where I live…

the only difference between those two markers is 0.01 millimeters. Both should work fine but if the panel line is very narrow the 0.03 may have problems getting in there.
