Gaijin Gunpla

This morning I checked on the internetz the release date for the new big kit for November, the 1/144 RG ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam and noticed that Bandai had scheduled to release it on Thursday, November 21st which is kind of odd as they usually release their new stuff on Saturdays. Getting a kit two days sooner than expected? Good times. Getting the kit even earlier as a sample? Awesome. That is indeed what happened. While sitting at my desk doing what could be called work a co-worker approached me and handed me this:

Needless to say, I was quite excited (still am, actually). This isn’t the first time I received a sample kit. I did get one other when the 1/100 MG Gundam RX-78-2 Ver. 3.0 release was upon us, though I didn’t expect I’d receive another one. But I have, and it’s awesome, and I secretly ask myself, ‘Does this mean I’ll get an early sample of the Sazabi?‘ But now I’m just getting head of myself. Let’s look at the RG Strike Freedom and what everyone can expect in the box when his/hers arrives.

Here is the manual and the decal sheet. You can see there are the gold foils used for joints. The novelty of these has worn off for me as many times the end result isn’t worth the time it takes to get these into proper position but I was more occupied by the stickers for the shield. There are six of them. This is similar to the RG Destiny Gundam so it’s not a big surprise or anything.

Speaking of stickers…

There are quite a few here.

Here are the two ‘important’ runners for the frame.

You get the standard RG frame runner, this time molded in gold, but you also get a plated gold runner with Dragoon frame parts. Bling!

You also get two other runners with frame parts and it’s worth noting that they are not the same colour. The different tones of armour we find in every RG kit has made its way to the frame for the Strike Freedom.

Dragoon armour!

Here’s the C runner with the red parts and also some of the weapon parts. Note the lone yellow part of this kit is found here.

White armour pieces for the symmetrical areas.

Here’s the A runner with the beam sabers, the darker blue parts along with darker white armour parts and the shield.

It awaits your stickering.

I had planned to take it easy tonight, but I guess that has changed.

    Hi there,

How’d you get to receive a sample kit from Bandai? Do you sign up for it? Is there a process I can read about it?

I can already see you painting the B Runner. Any plans on the F1 runner? Probably spray that with Gold as well and another coat of Clear Yellow to get the same “shade” effect?

Hmm I’m not sure about all these different golds, will be interested in your approach Syd? Reckon I’ll be painting some of these…

I actually don’t mind the stickers. Sure the beam shields we saw in kits such as the MG/PG strike freedom look good but you’ve no way to change the look if you want to. Now you have a clear plastic shield you can paint any way you want and if you want the original look all you’ve got to do is apply stickers.

Yeah I’m tempted to get some clear paint for mine, but the stickers do seem to work well.

I’m still not a fan of the budget gold tho, will be good to see it together…

I just noticed this but the back of the arms feels naked with gold arm frame expose.

Wow this is what I have been waiting for…Where can I buy this in the US? I saw your link to the hlj but wasn’t sure if any US stores were going to get this or not.

Keep in mind that it’s not yet released in stores. The official release is still a couple days away. Once that day comes you’ll start seeing them in shops that sell Gunpla.
