Gaijin Gunpla

It’s 2014 everybody! Many will respond that it’s been 2014 for a week now and you are right! While I’d like to claim that I was super busy doing awesome things all week long that isn’t the case. This year I was indeed lucky to have the entire week off from work but ended up having familial obligations and such that kept me posting here on

But don’t let that make you think that I neglected Gunpla all that time because that is not the case. The week I was off was also a week of clear, yet cold, weather and I used the few hours of warmth in mid-afternoon each day to paint parts of the MG Sazabi Ver Ka. I’ve thrown my hat into the ring as part of the Group Build on Gundam Australia Forum dubbed Operation Big Wallet Destroyer and being in a group build means taking the game up a notch so I’ve been doing some customizing of certain areas of the Sazabi while painting the frame parts. The frame is pretty much done now and I hope to get it together for some pics soon. I’ll have all the information regarding my Sazabi work in an upcoming post as well as posting it on GAF. Sneak Peak!

Most of my time, however, was spent driving family members around. Gai-Gun Jr. also had the week off, of course, and so we had to keep ourselves occupied and that meant going shopping, going to parks, going to game centres, and getting her out of the house before she wears out Grandpa and mommy. Being the new year, or 正月(shou-gatsu), here in Japan that means visiting temples. I felt sorry for my father-in-law. He’s spent almost his entire life on Chichijima in the Ogasawara Island chain and has rarely experienced temperatures below 17 degrees Celsius. Staying with us while he underwent surgery and now chemotherapy he has to deal with temperatures hovering around zero and I’m sure he hates it. But he preserved and bundled up to head to the temple near our home to offer prayers for the new year. I kind of wonder what is going through his mind when he does so. People go to the temples at the beginning of each year to pray for health, happiness, and success. There are even temples that offer a place to pray for a specific thing such as success at work and problem-free childbirths. But watching him stand there with his eyes closed briefly I wonder exactly what kind of prayer he made knowing he has only a few years left to live. Yes, the cancer surgery was successful in removing his stomach, but that came too late and the cancer has spread internally and there isn’t any real hope to cure it. The doctor gave him about two years.

And so with that thought firmly in our minds we enter 2014 hoping to make the last months together memorable and comfortable for the old guy. I don’t know if that’s possible here in Tokyo with this cold weather and I suspect my wife’s father will decide to head back to Chichijima sooner rather than later to spend whatever time he has left in a familiar, and warm, environment. I would probably do the same.

But let’s leave the heavier topics for another time and talk Gunpla. 2014 looks like it’s going to be a great year Gunpla-wise and even starts off with a bit of a bang with two Master Grade kits in the first month. That’s right we get both the MG Build Strike Gundam Full Package (have you seen the box art for that!?) and also the MG GX-9900 Gundam X! It’s going to be a busy first month so I better get my ass in gear and finish that Sazabi. I’ve also got the HG FA Gundam (Thunderbolt Ver.) underway and would have had it finished but last friday, as I was carefully applying a small foil sticker with my hobby knife, I started shaking uncontrollably. Thinking I had just been spending too much time staring at tiny things that week I put down the part and knife and stood up. …And almost fell over. I knew immediately something was up and grabbed the thermometer and took my temperature. 38 degrees. Yup, I got sick just at that end of my week off. Blah!

What about everyone else? How did you ring in the New Year and what are you most excited for (Gunpla-wise or other) when it comes to 2014?

There is on other, semi-serious, question I need to ask you readers. Do you have any issues at times accessing I’ve noticed it runs slow occasionally but I’ve also recently started seeing a error in regards to traffic limit. Is anyone out there having problems bringing up the site? It may be that I’ve outgrown my original package with my server provider and will need to upgrade. Thanks for your feedback and all the best this new year.

I know the feeling, no one should experience it…

Man that FA gundam is looking soooo cool!!! So much Gunpla, so little time!!! I’d like to make a custom paint job of it that will resemble Thanatos from Persona 3 (the multiple mountable shields just BEG me to do so.)

I’ve noticed a bandwidth exceeded message a couple of times last month, I’ve experienced no lag however. Prayers out to you and your family, looking forward to the new year and some great model kits.

Hi and Happy New Year to you too, 2014 sure seems like it will be a busy year.

I have quite a heavy backlog already oh well.

Btw just completed my first pg and ever since and seeing the dwarfing effects it has on even mg, i’m wondering how i can get back in the game… did that happen to anyone post pg building, the engineering and build was such a marvel i’m wondering if i can ever capture the amzament again, never did one of the recent MG Ver KA …

Belated Happy New Year! Sorry to hear about your father in law, I hope he can live out his time in comfort and peace.

Over my new years break I slowly worked on my Sazabi, putting decals on him now. After that… well, I have to brace myself for the time and money required for the upcoming Phenix (or whatever!)…
