Gaijin Gunpla

The wizards at Bandai have done it again. Remember back when the Real Grade line was just taking off and there was talk of an RG Zeta? I speculated that it may be a part swapper because we hadn’t seen a transforming Real Grade kit up to that point and it seemed designing a transformation with the RG frames may be tricky.

I was wrong.

That same speculation reared its head again when rumours began to circulate that the Unicorn Gundam may make an appearance in the Real Grade lineup. We wondered how Bandai would make it work. Well, wonder no longer (or at least wonder only for a few more days until I get this built and can show you.)

The RG Unicorn is here. Well, two of them. Okay, that’s a little misleading. There are two releases but the only difference is the box art.

As you can see there is the RG RX-0 Unicorn Gundam.

And the limited edition RG Unicorn Gundam (Limited Package) which has the words ‘Premium “Unicorn Mode” Box’ on the package.

Interestingly, Bandai designates the Premium Box kit as Real Grade #25-SP.

Other than that everything on the boxes, and the contents inside, are the same.

Let’s look at the runners. Here is the A runner.

Just like with the MG Unicorn kits the A runner is clear red, otherwise known as psycho-frame, parts.

But here’s the money. The B runner which is the all important frame.

So it appears that in order to make the transformation work Bandai molded the B runner to include the psycho-frame parts. Well played, Bandai.

All the white parts appear on runners c, D, E, and F.

These include the Unicorn horns for both modes.

G runner is a lot of frame parts.

H is multi-coloured.

And I looks to have the weapons.

Yes, we know what we are looking at here.

The manual is, not surprisingly, a little thicker than most RG manuals.

The last few pages show the transformation from Unicorn Mode to Destroy Mode.

The last page shows all those now very recognizable Unicorn markings.

Markings take the longest! It may be a while before I get all those on.

This reminds me that I’ve got an ongoing Real Grade Complete Project. I’ve just fallen further behind.

I’ll just add that this kit is the first that has me on the outside looking in. When this was revealed at the Shizuoka Hobby Show this past May I had already left Japan and was not able to be there and experience that announcement. From here on out, all kit releases will be a little bit foreign to me.

Great review, I could not choose between them since their displays are same. Now this review makes it more clear.
